Highway Department, Operator II

Brookfield Highway Department seeks an additional full-time operator/laborer to join our team.
Wage $22.92 per hour, Full-time 40 hours per week. This is a fully benefited position.

Highway Department
Operator II

Purpose:
Performs a variety of duties of semi-skilled, laboring and equipment operation in the operations of the Highway Department.

Supervision
Under the direction of the Highway Superintendent, or the Foreman during the absence of the Superintendent

Essential Functions
• Performs a variety of semi-skilled and laboring duties for the department.
• Performs manual labor in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads and sidewalks.
• Performs a variety of duties related to snow and ice events including plowing, sanding, and shoveling which may require early morning starts, extended hours, and weekend duty including holidays.
• Performs routine maintenance in the repair and maintenance of equipment and tools.
• Removes and/or trims trees.
• Assists with maintenance of crosswalks and line painting.
• Performs a variety of landscaping duties, including mowing and trimming.
• Drives trucks & equipment in plowing, sanding & salting operations.
• Operates light &/or heavy equipment, of high complexity.

Competencies:
• Knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques relative to public roads, snow and ice control and practices
• Ability to interact with coworkers tactfully and effectively and maintain relations with the public in a professional & courteous manner.
• Ability to respond to emergency work during non-working hours.
• Follows prescribed safety rules & regulations.
• Ability to work in high pressure situations, as necessary.


Education and Experience/Other Requirements

  • High School diploma. Advanced training relating to equipment maintenance preferred. 2 years’ experience working for a highway department or related construction field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License Class B with airbrakes endorsement
  • Hoisting Engineer’s License
  • Must pass drug and alcohol screening.

Work is outdoors, under varying weather and other conditions. Must be able to: access all areas/levels of construction and excavation sites/ traverse uneven terrain; and enter, exit, and operate vehicles.
While performing the duties the employee is required to regularly engage in strenuous physical effort, including repetitious physical motions; lifting and/or moving 50 pounds or more; operation of heavy and light equipment, vehicles, tools; and moving about all indoor and outdoor work sites efficiently. Must be available to respond to emergencies during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
