The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) collected a water sample from Quaboag Pond on Monday (8/18). Laboratory analysis showed cyanobacteria levels of 1,900 cells/ml, which is below the MDPH guideline level of 70,000 cells/ml. The toxin microcystin was not detected in the sample (<1 ppb).
MDPH requires two rounds of samples below the guideline level, collected one week apart, to recommend rescinding an advisory. This result will be considered the first low sample, and MDPH will sample the pond again next Monday (8/25). The advisory remains in place for now, and we will update you next week when we hear from MDPH.
