The Assessors office is responsible for the valuation of real and personal property for the purpose of levying the property tax. The assessors are also responsible for submitting the tax rate recapitulation sheet to the Department of Revenue, although the preparation of this document a team effort with the Town’s finance officials. Assessors have the authority to grant real estate and motor vehicle abatements and exemptions to taxpayers, subject to the authority provided by State of Massachusetts law.
Members of Brookfield’s Board of Assessors are elected to 3 year terms by the voters at the annual town election. The Principal and Assistant Assessors are appointed by the Board.
