General Information
When Do Town Meetings Take Place?
- The date and agenda for the Annual Town Meeting are set by an official warrant issued by the Town.
- Annual Town Meetings typically occur in May or June.
When Are Meeting Notices and Information Available?
- Notice of the Annual Town Meeting is posted in at least one public place in Town at least seven days before the meeting.
- Town Reports, which include financial information and reports from Town boards and committees, are available at least five days before the meeting at a location designated by the Select Board.
- The official warrant is mailed to all Brookfield residents, when possible.
Who Can Participate?
- Registered voters of Brookfield may vote at Town Meeting.
- A minimum of 30 voters must be present to conduct business.
- Non-voters may speak only with permission of the meeting.
How the Meeting Is Run?
- The meeting is led by the Town Moderator, who ensures that discussion and voting follow Town bylaws.
- Items on the warrant are usually discussed in the order listed, unless voters decide otherwise.
- Motions may be required in writing, and some motions may be divided and voted on separately.
- Most votes may be reconsidered only once, and only under specific rules.
- All articles on the warrant must be addressed before the meeting can end, though some items may be postponed to a later session.
How Do Residents Vote at Town Meeting?

- If electronic voting is unavailable, votes may be taken by voice or by standing count.
- In some cases, the meeting may require a Yes or No ballot vote.
