Board of Health Update on Quaboag Pond (North Pond)

Even though the pond is looking much better right now, the toxic algae bloom advisory is still in effect. It could be another 1-2 weeks for the advisory to be lifted. Find state advisory notices here: https://www.mass.gov/alerts/harmful-cyanobacterial-bloom-advisories-in-m…

The reason for this is because once an advisory is made it requires two negative lab tests to lift the advisory. Each test has to be taken a week apart, and testing cannot begin until the pond shows signs of recovery. Once an algae bloom begins to die off, the cyanotoxins that are found in the cells of the algae get released from the cells into the water, so the testing is not initiated until after the bloom begins to die off. This is to ensure that the harmful toxins are no longer present in the water. For more information see: https://www.mass.gov/algae-blooms

Testing of the lake began on Monday by our lab during its regular visit to South Pond to test the beach for E.coli. Unfortunately, their turnaround time is longer than originally expected. On Tuesday afternoon, the South Pond Flow Barrier was opened which has also helped to flush that area of the pond. State officials visited the area yesterday and after discussion with MDPH, the State will also begin testing the pond, and their lab results should be turned around much more quickly.

I know that this update is not what you wanted to hear. North pond is a little tough because it is quite shallow and we have had several hot and sunny days which algae thrives on.South pond remains open at this time. The river area west of White’s landing is also open. Once the advisory is lifted we will announce it. Thank you for your continued patience.
